Disney Channel's David Henrie to Star in "The Weapon"
Disney Channel star David Henrie is set to star in the theatrical adaptation of the Platinum Studios’ comic book “The Weapon.” Henrie stars in Disney Channel’s “Wizards of Waverly Place,” which won an Emmy in September for Outstanding Children’s Program. In addition, “Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie” was cable television's most-watched program of the year with over 11.4 million viewers. Henrie will play Tommy, a martial arts enthusiast and inventor who has developed a ground-breaking portable innovation. But is Tommy’s invention manufactured or an ancient mystical technique? An evil order wants it and will stop at nothing to get it.
"The Weapon" hails from Platinum Studios' large multi-universe library of over 5,600 comic characters, which rivals that of Marvel, recently acquired by Disney for $4 Billion, and of the recently revamped DC Entertainment, owned by Warner Bros. Today, publicly traded Platinum Studios is now one of the largest rights holders of exploitable comic book characters in the world independent of Hollywood studio ownership.
"MAL CHANCE" En Route to Silver Screen
Platinum Studios is proud to announce it has partnered with Tony Krantz, veteran producer of such films as director David Lynch’s “Mulholland Drive” and executive producer of FOX’s “24,” to develop the Platinum Studios graphic novel, “Mal Chance”. Screenwriter Scott Murphy has been tapped to write the screenplay.
“Mal Chance” is the story of Lola, a member of an ancient society of assassins targeted for death by a powerful gangster. Lola’s only hope for survival is to bring down the gangster’s entire illicit organization with the help of Dennis, a by-the-numbers FBI agent, unaware of her true identity.
“Flame understood ‘Mal Chance’ from the moment we first sat down and discussed it,” said Platinum Studios CEO Scott Rosenberg. "Tony and his team have a real vision for this world and how to capture it on film.”
“‘Mal Chance’ is a wonderfully visual world steeped with contemporary and complex characters – all playing on the edge of life and death decisions,” said Krantz. “Working with Scott and Platinum continues to be a true pleasure and symbiotic.”
"Iron Man" director may take on adapation of "Cowboys & Aliens"
The Hollywood Reporter and Daily Variety reported that Iron Man director Jon Favreau may direct the DreamWorks Studios and Universal Studios feature film adaptation of Platinum’s graphic novel Cowboys & Aliens, which Robert Downey Jr. has been attached to since last summer.
Imagine Entertainment principals Brian Grazer and Ron Howard are producing with DreamWorks’ Steven Spielberg and Platinum Studios' Scott Mitchell Rosenberg. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, writers of Star Trek and Transformers, are producing, as well as writing the adaptation of the graphic novel with Damon Lindelof of Lost.
The news came only one day after Disney’s announcement of their $4 Billion acquisition of Marvel. This, along with Warner Bros.’ ownership of DC Comics, leaves Platinum Studios as one of the largest rights holders of exploitable comic book characters in the world which stands independent of any studio affiliation.
